Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.

It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.

Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to  regurgitate the information herein).

Hey fam,

Lovely to see so many of you at the Community Cup on Sunday. It was a ripper of a day, only bested by the thrashing that was handed out to the Rocking Horses (more on that later).

We’re very quickly closing in on the ten days of Radiothon, which will kick off next Friday. Radiothon is a huge station-wide effort and I’m really looking forward to how you take the theme of Radio Against the Machine and run with it.

I’m working on the Radiothon manifesto at the moment. That will have some simple talking points if you need and all the details of prizes, etc. If there’s anything you’d really like to be in there please let me know.

One of the things that will be helpful this year is not having show specific prizes. This means we can focus the on-air chat on the prizes Sass has sourced from some very kind supporters, with some worth well over $10k. I’ve got more deets on that below.
Announcers, keep an eye on your emails for an invite to a pre-Radiothon zoom catch-up next Wednesday night.

As always, let me know if you have any questions or need a hand with anything.

Cheers,
Stocky

Catch of the Week - Brisbane Lines Community Cup victory

While not technically an on-air event of the last week, I think it’s pretty hard to go past the decisive victory of the Brisbane Lines over the Rocking Horses at the Community Cup on the weekend.

It was a really wonderful day raising money for Reclink and I’m stoked that zed was able to play a role in helping support the cause. As well as a heap of zedders taking the ground for the Lines and the Horses it was awesome to see so many of you there supporting the day as well.

We’re now 4 wins to the Rocking Horses 2. That pretty clearly sets us up as favourites going into next year’s cup, but if any Rocking Horses want to come and look at what they’ve missed out on the cup is just behind my desk.

Sub Plug of the Week - Zedgiest

I’ve heard some wonderful plugs over the last week, but Zedgiest took the cake this morning.

A bit after 7am the sub light flashed away, prompting Jack and Luci to start chatting about the old subscriptions. This is a tricky time of year to do those plugs. With Radiothon so close, they had to walk the line between encouraging people to sub today, or maybe, waiting 10 days and subscribing when they could win some prizes.

The two managed the pitch really well. They reminded people we still need their support, so anytime is a good time to sub. There was also a website plug so folks know where they can go to seal the deal.

What I loved about this was that it was a Radiothon plug as well as a sub plug. We’re getting pretty close now, so talk up Radiothon during your shows over the next week and a bit. You’ll also notice some pre-Radiothon spots in the roster, so make sure to give them a run.

Album of the Week - The Empty Threats with Monster Truck Mondays

Here you go! Album of the Week! It’s the Empty Threats with their new album, Monster Truck Mondays.

Here’s the skinny:

Launched in 2017, The Empty Threats (lovingly referred to by fans as ‘Empties’), is the project of Stu Patterson, Matt Schultz, Venus, Lenny Regione and Michael Bond. Since the release of their debut single in 2018, the group have drummed up a reputation for their politically-charged anthems adjacent to the post-punk of shame and Tropical F*ck Storm, melded with ‘80s Australiana. Monster Truck Mondays sees the group lean further into social advocacy, exploring themes of anxiety, existential dread, capitalism, LGBTQIA+ rights and colonialism over snarling bass, frenzied guitar work, restless percussion and electric clarinet.

Fingerless continued the run of Albums of the Week taking out our most played new release. They were chased by PRINK in number two and Kathleen Turner Overdrive, our third most played.

Welcome our new Pass the Mic trainees

Last week we wrapped up our third round of our Pass the Mic Training!

In this pic you’ve got Andrew, Alice, Kellie and Tab (Souljah Sistars host and trainer). We also had a few others, including Theo and Callum take part over at Triple A.

We’re keen to get these folks on some shows over the next few weeks to finish their training and after that we’ll get them helming their own shows! Very exciting times.

Thanks heaps to our friends at the CMTO who helped run this training and to Triple A for hosting us for the training for a few days.

No Radiothon show prizes

So as I mentioned earlier, this year we’re looking to move away from shows giving out their own prizes. This is so we give our Radiothon sponsors lots of love for the great prizes they’ve donated for this year.

I don’t want to be a total buzz-kill, so if you have organised your own prize (or want to) let me know and we can chat about what could work. I realise you’ve got a much better understanding of your audience and what they’re interested in than I do, so I’m keen to chat.

Thanks for playing along! If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing manager@4zzz.org.au by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the 4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
