Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.

It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.

Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to  regurgitate the information herein).

It's almost here! There's less than three days until the start of Radiothon and the station is starting to fill up with activity. If you're at reception you're stepping around boxes and volunteers pack and fold the Radiothon merch pack (and put new merch away - vintage banana tees and bee long sleeves anyone?).

Production is beavering away on level 2 making spots to make sure we can soak the airwaves in Radiothon messages while shows are already talking up the campaign.

On level 3 there's a pile of painted signs for social messages and everyone is trying to make sure we've got you everything you need for the campaign (yes, this includes beer and food for volunteers helping answer phones and pack sub packs).

Read on for some of the pre-Radiothon news - announcer meeting, vollie callouts, billboards - and I'll come at you with some more details and info later in the week.

We'll have posters at the station tomorrow, so feel free to grab a pile to drop them around your part of town. Corflutes will arrive tomorrow, so let me know if you're keen for one of them too.

If you've got any questions about anything (Radiothon or not) please let me know. I'm always very keen to help where I can.

Cheers,
Stocky

Catch of the Week - Locked In Cable Ties Interview

Last week CJ from Locked In flicked around an email offering up an interview her and Traci had done with Jenny from Cable Ties

That interview got a run on Monday Sparkzzz and it was fantastic. I really enjoyed the curiosity that CJ and Traci took into the talk about incarceration and mental health. The new record has songs that are based around prisons and I loved Locked In taking the initiative to do the interview and then share it with the rest of the station.

The convo felt like more of a discussion about the social issues around us, rather than a chat with a musician, which is a testament to the messages that Cable Ties put forward with their art and the way CJ and Traci approached the interview.

I’d highly recommend catching up if you missed it the first time. You can listen back by jumping into the second hour of Monday Sparkzzz.

Sub Plug of the Week - The Hangover (feat Alphabet Soup)

There was some very fun chat at the start of The Hangover yesterday as Jodie revealed her zed subscription had lapsed.

This was a great segue into a sub plug and, interestingly, a discussion about why she won’t be resubscribing straight away.

You see, Jodie knows that Radiothon is starting on Friday so she’s holding off a few days so she can renew and go into the prize draw. This was a great chance for her to explain how close the campaign is and get that at the front of people’s minds.

It’s important we keep this messaging up this week because Radiothon starts a little later this year than it did in 2022. The people who subscribed in the first few days of the campaign last year will already have expired, so we need to make sure they know they need to renew very soon.

Honourable mention to Linda on Alphabet Soup, who talked about how she puts a couple of bucks away every week to make sure she’s got enough money to buy a passionate pack come Radiothon. She does this because she loves the Radiothon merch, which you can only get as a Passionate or Super subscriber (you can’t buy it any other way), and doesn’t want to have to worry about having a spare $130 come Radiothon. Very smart!

I’ll have lots more Radiothon info coming to you on Thursday this week with the Radiothon manifesto and the return of the daily emails. I haven’t decided what I’m going to call those emails yet - not sure if I can top the Adventure Guide from last year - so come at me if you want naming rights.

Album of the Week - Dippers with Clastic Rock

Album of the Week time! This week, Dippers with their new album, Clastic Rock. Get behind it!

Here’s the world from the AOTW Committee:

"Whilst we were sad local band Thigh Master packed up and decamped to Melbourne, we're more than thrilled that said band have metamorphosed into a whole new entity - Dippers! Featuring former 4ZZZ Station Manager Innez Tulloch and Tenth Court Records founder Matthew Ford, Dippers came to our attention recently with the singles 'Tightening The Tangles' and 'Encouragement in Brackets', and quickly found much airplay here at the station. The album 'Clastic Rock' features the aforementioned singles and a whole slew of indie jangle pop gems. Former Zed announcer Dusty Anastassiou (Dag/Permits) also joins the party on a few tracks. Rock on!"

Radiothon Annoucer Meeting - WEDNESDAY 6:30pm

With Radiothon mere days away, we’re bringing all the announcers together on Wednesday night at 6:30pm to chat about the campaign.

This will be where we try to give you everything you need to encourage people to subscribe during Radiothon, let you know about a few things that will be happening around the station and tell you where all the skeletons are kept where to find all the Radiothon info.

Here’s the link -
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88170584792?pwd=S2ZSYlgrTkVjNjBWbXE1QnBQQTJOdz09

This is also a great opportunity to ask any questions you’ve got about what you should or shouldn’t be doing during the campaign.

It won’t be a long meeting, I’m keen to be done by 7pm. There will also be a recording that goes around after.

Radiothon Volunteering Callout

We need your help! Radiothon is a logistical whirlwind and the only way it happens is with lots of help from our friends.

We’re looking for folks to help answer phones, pack sub packs, work on merch desks and generally help us get it done.

Salty has put together an incredible google form for you let us know what you’re able to help out with. You can jump into that here - https://forms.gle/cAzQ1HeJm1nbg1oL7 (Note: We’ve already sorted up to and including Saturday).

Keep in mind we’re going to be asking you what your volunteer commitment has been when you’re reapplying for your show in a few months ;-)

Billboards are Back!

We’re getting right in people’s faces over the next couple of weeks, with Sass getting the Radiothon artwork on a bunch of billboards around town.

Not only does this look awesome and we get lots of people thinking about zed, we get lots of new listeners as well.

This means it’s important to station ID, tell people your name and explain Radiothon during each mic break. This can sound something like, “Hey you’re listening to Brighten the Corners, my name is Alan and we’re gearing up for Radiothon at the moment - which is our annual subscriber drive.”

I don’t want you to change what’s in your show because we’ve got more people listening. If anything, I want you to double down and showcase what makes us different from other radio!

Pay it Forward Subscriptions coming soon

We all know how wonderful it is to be a part of the zed community, but there are many folks who aren’t able to get involved. To help bridge that gap, we’ll soon be offering Pay it Forward subscriptions.

Once these go live there will be an option in the zed merch cart for people to purchase these. People who would like a subscription but can’t get one, for either financial reasons or because they’re incarcerated, can then apply.

You can find more info on the zed wiki here - https://wiki.4zzz.org.au/index.php/Pay_it_forward_subscriptions - or you can hit me up with any questions you’ve got.

I'll let you know when these go live so you can start talking about them on air (don't do that yet).

Announcer Training Applications Open

Another reminder that we’re running a new round of announcer training after Radiothon - August the 27th and September 3rd.

Last week I got the link wrong, but I’ve fixed that now - https://forms.gle/C5Spq2Q1yuUW2TA9A

If you’re keen to get on air, this is your way to do it! Don’t be a stranger! If you do some volunteering through Radiothon you’ll be well placed to grab yourself a spot!

Thanks for playing along! If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing manager@4zzz.org.au by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the 4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
