Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.
It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.
Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to
regurgitate the information herein).
Your weekly zed update here. It's got all the usual bits, some shoutouts and a callout for some new computer monitors (hit me up if you or your work have any lying around).
Read on for the full deets and see you tonight if you're coming to the AGM!
Catch of the Week - Blunt
Blunt is one of those shows that I’m so proud calls 4ZZZ home. It’s an irreverent romp through some awesome tunes every Friday night and great way to relax into the weekend.
It’s hard to fault a show that starts with a TISM song and then goes straight into a plug about all the different ways you can listen to 4ZZZ (FM, DAB+, the zed website). Wonderful radiocraft.
This led into a ripper two hours of music and plenty of chat about what’s happening around town. Everything from funk to punk to electronic. Very fun ride.
If you’re looking to take yourself a little bit less seriously this week, dive into the OnDemand and listen back to last week’s show. Get it here.
Sub Plug of the Week - Monday Sparkzzz
Billie used the sub light for some sub plug inspiration this morning. Right at the start of the show there was a new sub and Billie gave an excellent shout-out to Joel from Giralang.
As you all know, these plugs are a great reminder - even in isolation - to help remind folks that we’re only here thanks to their support.
Don’t forget that we’ve got a monthly subscriber prize now as well. This month’s prize is a record pack from Suitcase Records, which is a pack of 7 LPs from artists including Mouse, Relay Tapes and Sahara Beck. Check out this page for more info.
We’re doing this to help encourage people to subscribe through the year so please use this info to solicit new supporters. We’re a big behind again this month, so it’d be great if you could squeeze in an extra one here and there.
Album of the Week - The Blankettes with Witch on my Chest
Very well deserved album of the week this week, with The Blankette’s new album, Witch on my Chest, taking home the chocolates.
Here’s the write-up from the AotW committee:
"The Blankettes are a local band getting lots of airplay on the station of late, especially with singles 'Wide Brown Land' and 'Two Fish'. Both singles feature on the debut EP 'Witch On My Chest', an EP whilst a jangly guitar toe tapper also could be an exercise in catharsis for lead singer and one time 4ZZZ Station Manager Grace Pashley. It's all types of Brispop goodness. And well, there's something we want to get off our chests at the Zeds too - we love supporting local music!"
The Blankettes are already all over zed, taking out our most played new release of the last week. Your plays saw Platonic Sex and Dream Poppies following them.
Disability Open Day Success!
On Sunday we chucked on a barbie and opened the doors for our first Disability Open Day. This was a couple of orgs and other folks who were interested in volunteering.
Huge props to Salty and Belle for getting this together. It was a great way to bring people into the station and learn a heap about how accessible this space is. There’s lots we need to do, but there’s some things that are easier that we thought they’d be!
We're going to run another one of these soon, so I'll keep you posted with all the details.
Don’t forget, it’s our AGM tonight! Doors are at 6:30pm for a 7pm start at The Triffid.
This is where 4ZZZ subscribers (you!) elect the station’s board, the folks who set the strategic direction of the station. You can check out the candidates on this page to see who you think is best for this - 4zzz.org.au/governance.
There will be some snacks, there’s a bar and we’ll have the crew from Auslan Stage Left translating the event.
We’re on the lookout for a few new monitors. Please hit me up if your work (or your home) has a spare one lying around.
We’re in the middle of upgrading a heap of the zed computer, but just need some of these to help finish off that project.
Come at me!
Thanks for playing along! If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing email@example.com by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the
4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
