Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.

It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.

Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to  regurgitate the information herein).

Here we are. After more than 100,000 words since September 2021 (when I started drafting this in google docs), we've arrived at my last ever volunteer newsletter. From next week Jack is in and I’m going to have him take the reins, including this newsletter, while I sit at the table next to his desk shouting encouraging slogans like, “Go Jack!” and “You’re doing great!” because I know he will be.

I’ll still be around for a few more weeks at zed, doing a handover with Jack to help him get the lay of the land. My last day will be Friday the 15th of December and if you want to come and say goodbye I’ll have a going away on Thursday the 14th at Netherworld, probably from around 3 or 4pm (maybe 2pm if I’m really phoning it in by then).

There’s plenty happening before then though. There’s a station meeting tomorrow, a volunteer end of year party and our birthday next weekend, Hot 100 voting! So much! Make sure you read on so you know what’s what.

Before I sign off and let you read about what's happening, I want to thank you for everything you do for 4ZZZ. This place is only here because you show up to help connecting and amplifying the voices of our community. Like I said at the AGM a few weeks ago, it’s been amazing to help support you all for the last few years and I’m so proud of how you’ve all helped the station grow during that time.

If you need a hand with anything or have any questions, keep coming at me (or this email address specifically). I know Jack will be just as keen as I’ve been to help you as I have, so always keep that coming.

Stay free,
Stocky

Catch of the Week - The Punk Show

I’m shouting out Nel from the Punk Show this week for a ripper show last week.

All the music was great, the chat between songs was on topic and engaging, but what I loved most was how Nel brought the scene into the show.

This wasn’t by anything too special, it was a simple chat about how people can submit music to 4ZZZ, encouraging them to send in their music so we can help rep them. I’m sure Nel didn’t think much of this, but it was a moment that showcased how we can help support this city’s scene.

Thanks Nel!

There was also a really lovely sub plug after this chat, which brings us to…

Sub Plug of the Week - Megaherzzz

I’m going back to last Monday again for this week’s sub plug, with Megaherzzz last week taking the title. It pricked my ears up because Ellen and Denise launched into it with a chat about our monthly sub prize for November - a Record and Merch pack from Suitcase Records.

It wasn’t all about the prize though, that was the intro, but then it rolled into the different sub categories and gave instructions on how to subscribe, encouraging people to jump onto the zed website - support.4zzz.org.au.

This pitch worked too! We had a couple of subscribers join the zed family not long after this callout.

The Hangover also did a ripper plug with the monthly prize too.

Thanks so much for all of your sub plugs. We’ve gotten much better at asking people to support the station and have seen a jump in the number of folks subscribing to the station - it’s about three a day now which is incredible!

There’s still so much potential for more subscribers, so keep reminding listeners that we’re only here because they support us!

Album of the Week - Nam Shub of Enki with Dunning Kruger

Stoked that the final AotW for 2023 and my tenure has an album cover that reminded me I still need to do the wordle for today.

Shout out to our own Nam Shub of Enki (an Electric Crush host if you’re playing at home), with his new record Dunning Kruger.

Here’s the skinny from the AotW committee: "For the last 4ZZZ AOTW of the year we salute a local gem - The Nam Shub of Enki. If you love Monster Zoku Onsomb and listen to Electric Crush on Friday nights 102.1 FM, you'll probably be already prepped on this experimental psychedelic techno flavouring. But! Without further ado, let's rave to the end of 2023!"

To go with your Album of the Week, I’ve also got our most played from the last week, topped by our last AotW, Perve Endings, ahead of Thelma Plum and then Platonic Sex.

Finally, thank you so much to Nicholas Jones for all of his work compiling these most played lists each week. I can only assume it takes him days of wresting with excel to milk out this data, but he still does it with a smile on his face (I assume, it actually comes by email).

On top of this, for something like the last 130 weeks, every email starts with a pun on Stocky, which is an outstanding commitment to the bit.

Thank you Nick! He’s not just the charming host of The Chart Show, he’s one other thing too!

Station Meeting Tomorrow - 6pm

This is an easy one!

Station meeting tomorrow - 6pm - Zed Towers.

This is compulsory if you’re an announcer, so make sure you come along. As with previous meetings we keep a record of this and will surprise you with just how much we know at a moment you least expect it (spoiler alert: probably during show application season).

The meeting is open to all zed vollies, so come along if you’re keen to find out what’s happening around the station and see what Jack is like!

Here's the zoom link if you can't make it in person

There will be drinks, snacks and good times! Hopefully it’s all wrapped up by 7pm so everyone going to Devo can get there nice and early to line up out the front.

End of Year Vollie Party - December 9 - Bedford St Park - 1pm

We’re rolling to the end of the year and would love to get everyone together to celebrate a great 2023.
We’re thinking of Saturday December 9th at Bedford Street Park (just around the corner from zed) from 1pm.

There will be snacks and drinks provided, but feel free to bring anything along yourself (including partners, kids and dogs). It’d be great to hang out and celebrate a great year with you all!

This is the same day as the House Key’s 2 launch, so we’ll wrap up at the park around 4pm. This means you’ve still got plenty of time to get to West End to enjoy that.

Hot 100 Voting Opens on Friday

The Hot 100 is just around the corner and I’m very excited to give you a sneak peek of the artwork that Emetic has done for the campaign this year! Check it out!

Voting for the Hot 100 will open this Friday and we’ll have heap of details for you about what you can do to help promote that.

Voting is open to anyone who is keen, but subscriber votes count for double as an extra thank you for supporting the station. Make sure you remind people of that, because it might motivate them to subscribe before voting!

We’ll also have out Hot 100 Hangout on January 1st, counting down the final list, so keep an eye out for that.

4ZZZ Birthday Party - December 8 @ Bad Luck

We’ve got our 48th Birthday Party on Friday the 8th of December, which is next Friday!

To help us celebrate we’re having a battle of the cover bands featuring PhD, The Wayne Keys Show, Slurpee Jerks and Holidays for Hoodies. It’ll be quite the show!

It’ll be a real vibe. I think there will be a cake. There’s absolutely a bar. It’ll be super fun so come along!
There's still some posters outside of the studio, so grab them and spread them around town if you can.

Our Book Nook - Lv 3 Pigeonholes

We now have a zed book swap! Read on for deets.

---

Introducing 4ZZZ's internal community bookshelf! Yay!
Come share knowledge and stories within the Zed community! This is NOT A PUBLIC SERVICE rather something for announcers and volunteers to access.

If you have a book or two that you think would be nice to share with the Zed family, BRING IT IN! Have a browse of what's on the shelf and if anything catches your eye, feel free to take it home to read! Bring it back when you're done, or bring in something from your own collection to swap for it!

Please remember this ISN'T A BOOK DISPOSAL SERVICE. So try not to dump stacks of unwanted books! We'd love for this to be a space to share thoughtfully, so please only bring in books that you think are of interest to the community. If you'd like to donate books you can always head to your local Lifeline."

Our Accessibility legends!

This week is Disability Action Week, where we celebrate the work of folks with disability. We’re really lucky to have some very passionate disabled volunteers who are working really hard to improve access to zed for other disabled folks.

I’d like to shout out the incredible work that Belle from Only Human and Salty have been doing this year. They’ve both done heaps to try and improve access to the station. Also thanks to everyone on our Accessibility Reference Group who's been helping us figure out what we need to get done.

Props to Owen as well who has been crucial to developing our Accessibility Action Plan and has been doing loads behind the scenes to improve processes and find ways to address accessibility issues at the station.

I don’t think that one week really does this work justice, because this is happening year round, but it is a nice reminder to celebrate these folks.

Thanks for playing along! If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing manager@4zzz.org.au by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the 4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
