Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.

It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.

Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to  regurgitate the information herein).

It’s Parkinson’s Awareness Day today! The timing couldn’t be better with Salty’s show Rhinestone Cowgirl on the airwaves and it was wonderful to hear her talking about what it’s like living with Parkinson’s. I would highly recommending going back and having a listen to that to find out what it’s like living with that.

Show applications are open as well. Ian sent around the details last week, and I’ve got the link in a section further down.

In zed building news, we’re going to be powering down the station on Friday to do some much needed electrical work. There’s more on that below, so read on for the full deets.

In other zed building news, special mention to Pat, for rolling up to zed in the middle of the night last night to deal with a power outage we had. That kicked off around 11:30pm and wasn’t resolved until early this morning. Power outages can cause all sorts of hidden problems, so if anything is acting weird over the next week please let Pat or I know.

Finally, before you dive into the rest of this email, I want to thank Kristin from Heyday, who played a huge role in Access All Areas last weekend. In accidentally wrote Adele's name twice, so thanks to everyone who pointed out that mistake.

Let me know if there’s anything I can lend a hand with this week. I’m always around, so let me know if I can help!

Stay free,

April Atonement update

Things are still going well! We’ve almost doubled the number of subs from my Thursday email, so a pretty successful long weekend!

The messaging has been awesome, so thanks for reminding folks to subscribe and talking up the value of what we do.

To help you with this, there’s the spots you’ve been rostered, but also some really wonderful stings that production have whipped up.

These are short messages to help reinforce the April Atonement talk. They fit in perfectly between songs to help remind people why they should support zed!

You can find them all in the sponsorship spots folder on Fela. Full link here - audio/Sponsorship Spots/*~*April Atonement Stings 2023*~* (∩ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)⊃━☆゚. * USE AT WILL!

Also, those with a particular set of interests, you’ll be aware that next Thursday is 4/20. We’re working on a special April Atonement prize for that day, so I’ll have more details for you next week.

Here’s the social assets for you again as well (because it turns out I included the wrong link last time. Sorry!)

Catch of the Week - Spaghettification

Shoutout to Phaedra for an awesome Spaghettification on Zed Digital last week. The show was a wonderfully curated journey through a few different genres, from Brian Eno to The Flying Lizards.

In that mix there was a nice nod to Japanese composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto (who passed away a couple of weeks ago), with a couple of his tracks getting a run.

Def check this out if you’re after some very chill vibes. I caught up On Demand, and it was the soundtrack to a very productive hour. Well worth a listen if you’re of the Rusted Satellites, I Spy or Liminal Space disposition.

Check it out here.

Sub Plug of the Week - Bella on Duck Stab

Bella did a wonderful job of spruiking April Atonement on Friday during Duck Stab. I barely heard a mic-break where she wasn’t talking up subscribing or the joy of atoning this month.

It was fantastic messaging. There was loads of talk about what April Atonement is about (bringing back lapsed subs, tempting in those who listen but don’t subscribe, and returning our regular atonees) and then lots of good chat explaining why zed is an important place to support.

It was everything I ask for and more! Thank you! If you want to have listen back you can jump into the show here.

Also, props to Bella for putting the hard word on friends and family, with her dad joining as a subscriber during the show! Good work Dad!

Album of the Week - Cuckoo Coco, Not Made for Children

Aw hell yeah! Great to see some new stuff from Cuckoo Coco and even better to see it taking out Album of the Week!

Here’s the word from the Album of the Week Commitee:
Rapper/Producer Coco may have moved to Mount Isa, but that hasn't stopped the music flow. Anyone tuning into the Zeds the past year would have heard Cuckoo Coco all over the airwaves with albums 'Mood Street Gas Lighting' and 'Twice Exceptional'. Coco also performed both our First Nations Carpark Show and our Sounds Like Community Radio day here at the station in 2022. The new album 'Not Made For Kids' is on trend - that being - Cuckoo Coco is so damn prolific. The album follows themes of indigenous life in today's culture of "Australia" (Victim Of Society, The Quarters), braggadocio rap (Be The Boss, Middle Shift Bullshit) & happiness/love (Great Day, KABUKI). Enjoy.

Babagnouj was out most played new release last week, while being our Album of the Week, with Ghost Mutt in second and Being Jane Lane rounding out an entirely local top 3!

Powering Down Zed on Friday

Last night’s outage was just the introduction. We’re switching off the entire building on Friday to get some much needed electrical work done.

We’re getting a generator to run critical bits and pieces, but most of the place will be out of action. If you’re doing a show on Friday, I’ve already sent you an email. If you’re volunteering in another capacity try and do that remotely on Friday because you won’t have power to do much here.

Let me know if you’ve got any questions. Hopefully this is straightforward, but sing out if you’re not sure about any of this.

Show Applicaitons Open!

This is pretty self explanatory. Show applications are open.

You can apply here - http://jeff.4zzz.org.au/form/4zzz-show-applications
