Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.

It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.

Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to  regurgitate the information herein).

Heyo! Welcome to your weekly zed vollie newsletter, featuring everything you need to know about what's going on at the station.

April Atonement tops that list this week, so more deets on that. Some huge thanks for everyone who made Access All Areas a success over the weekend too.

We're also celebrating Triple A this week. They turn 30 this week which is a really exciting milestone and as a community radio sibling we're helping them mark the occasion. Read on for the deets of the Souljah Sistars special we did over the weekend and the simulcasst we've got planned for Thursday morning.

There's also notes in here about show applications, the zed Rights Framework and some cushions!

Hit me up if you've got any questions or want a hand with anything.

April Atonement is underway!

It has begun! April Atonement is underway and all is going well so far! The sub light has been going nuts, there’s been some awesome sub plugs and the artwork is fantastic (thanks Liz!).

I’ll go into more detail in my appraisal that I’ll send around on Thursday arvo, but we’re tracking about par at the moment. We’ve got a pretty big target this year, so that’s great news.

There are now announcer guides in the studios with all the prize details. Just keep reminding people to subscribe, plug the prizes and talk up the warm inner glow.

April Atonement is the marathon of the sub drives to Radiothon’s sprint, so take your time and have fun with the subscriber messages over the next few weeks.

Access All Areas Wrap

What an incredible day! If you couldn’t make it along, Access All Areas was an absolute hoot on Sunday at The Triffid.

Adele (Brighten the Corners) and Adele (Heyday) did a fantastic job of orgaising this event, lining up the likes of Doggie Heaven, Darren Hanlon, The Double Happiness, Locust Revival, Lunar Dirt, Tralala Blip, Adele and the Chandeliers and Dave and the Mudcrabs.

Special mention as well to DJ Belle Nouvelle (Only Human) who played between every band! An epic innings, so thank you Belle

Also props to all the vollies who made it run so smoothly too. It was a dream seeing so many smiling zed faces there. Everyone I’ve spoken to had a wonderful time, and you all made that happen!
Check out our socials for some or Rani’s incredible pics too!

Catch of the Week - 30 years of Triple A Souljah Sistars special

Huge shoutout to Tab from Souljah Sistars for hosting an incredible 30th Birthday show for Triple A on Sunday, which was broadcast on zed and 4AAA (98.9fm).

Making it to 30 years is a wonderful achievement for a community radio station, so I’m so proud that we were able to celebrate Triple A in this way.

Tabatha did an absolutely outstanding job of the program, hosting a heap of guests, folks who’ve been involved along the journey of zed and 4AAA.

There’s some wonderful history between the stations, so head here to listen back to the whole thing.

We’re going to continue the celebrations this week too, as we simulcast Triple A’s 30th birthday broadcast on Thursday between 9-10am.

Sub Plug of the Week - Kids with Class Kicking Ass

Kids with Class Kicking Ass came in hot on Saturday, with all sorts of April Atonement messaging to kick off this campaign.

They didn’t settle for just one mention, they dropped it a few times, which is exactly what we’re looking for. Then sending people to the website to seal the deal.

The messaging did take a bit to sink in though, it wasn’t until after 11am that the sub light started flashing, but we know that it takes people a few prompts to actually go and subscribe. That’s why it’s important to keep talking about April Atonement.

Album of the Week - Babaganouj, Jumbo Pets

Oh yeah! Another local album of the week, with Babaganouj’s latest release, Jumbo Pets, coming in hot.

Here’s the word from the Album of the Week committee:
"If you've tuned into 4ZZZ the last decade you'd be aware of how much Babaganouj has been played by Zed announcers of all stripes. 'Jumbo Pets' is the debut record we've been waiting for all this time! The band has quite the pedigree - frontman Charles Sale originally having played in Yves Klein Blue, Harriette Pilbeam did later become Hatchie, human metronome George Browning, and well, Ruby McGregor seems to play in at least 3 Brisbane bands at any one time (Slowrip/The Love Inn/Go Violets etc etc). This record beams with the sort of pop effervescence we've come to expect and expands on The Lemonheads/Smudge lineage even more. Planet Babaganouj is the planet we're on this week, and each week thereafter."

Last week’s Album of the Week, Ghost Mutt, was our most played new release of the last 7 or so days, followed up by Locust Revival and Babaganounj to round out an all local top 3 (it’s actually all locals to 5, but I didn’t want to write that many out, although now I’ve written this it would probably have been about the same. In that case, the other ones are The Gylcereens and Tia Gostelow)

Show applications open this Thursday

The wait is almost over! Show applications for the June to November Grid will be opening up THIS THURSDAY.

This is important news for not just existing shows, but new shows! If you’re keen to get a show on zed, this is your chance.

There’s no prize for getting your show application in really early, but it will impress both Ian and I, so there’s that.

Ian will flick around more details later this week, so for now, just brace yourself.

4ZZZ Rights Framework

As you would have seen towards the end of Marisa’s time with us last year, we were circulating the draft Rights Framework for feedback. This was endorsed by the 4ZZZ board at the end of last year and is how we deal with complaints at zed.

You can check out the whole thing on the wiki here. The wiki login is zeduser with the password 4zzzrules.

This process guides how we respond in situations where people haven’t had their rights upheld at the station. If you’re keen for more info about it, let me know and I’m happy to chat more.

As the policy explains, we’re seeking restorative and anti-punitive measures for dealing with issues. We don’t support cancel culture or tolerate gossip. If you’ve got concerns about someone or have heard of concerning behaviour, please come and tell me about it and we’ll work towards a solution that addresses it.

If you’re not comfortable talking to me, if I’ve been involved in something myself, or you don’t think I’ve acted appropriately when you’ve spoken to me, you can contact Alethea Beetson, the chair of the 4ZZZ board at chair@4zzz.org.au, Denise Foley, our secretary, at secretary@4zzz.org.au or the entire 4ZZZ board at board@4zzz.org.au (this email goes to all board members).

Zed cushions!

The wonderful Jo Ellis (of Tuesday morning reception fame) has delivered us a real treat with these custom 4ZZZ cushion covers!

If you’d like to test them out (which I can highly recommend) head down to reception and have a sit on the couch there.

Thank you Jo!!!!!
