Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.
It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.
Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to
regurgitate the information herein).
Hope you’re all well! I had a zed-filled weekend, hanging around the station on Saturday for Michelle Vlatkovic’s farewell (which was an absolute treat) and then the Cave Inn yesterday for the volunteer party. Thanks to everyone who came to that yesterday, it was wonderful to see you all.
In good news, FELA is looking pretty good at the moment thanks to the really hard work of Pat and Ben from Friday night and over the weekend.
We’re also rolling into Zedmas next week, which is our spin on what’s happening at the moment. More deets on what that is and how you can win prizes further down.
The Hot 100 voting is in full swing as well. That's open until midnight on Boxing Day, so you've got a whole day after Xmas to get that finished.
As I mentioned last week, I’m away from this Wednesday until next Wednesday so if you need anything please hit me up asap because I’m not going to be checking my email or phone while I’m away.
Read on for all the latest news and details so you know what’s going on.
Catch of the Week - Kids with Class Road Safety Special
What should have technically been an absolutely awful two hours or radio turned into one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard done with the medium on Saturday morning as Kids with Class Kicking Arse treated us to two hours of TISM’s Greg the Stop Sign.
It really shouldn’t have worked. People should have hated this. Instead the textline got behind it and kept requesting the song again and again. I’ve also seen some glowing emails thanking the team for this auditory treat (“I, for one, have never talked about this radio station more than I have in the last 24 hours and I can’t work out if this is 4D chess levels of marketing or pure happenstance”).
I’d like to congratulate the Kids in question, Danika, Polly and Converse, for taking the time to share such an important road safety message.
Catch of the Week #2 - Alexis on Tranzmission
I really enjoyed our news coordinator, Alexis’, cameo on Tranzmission last week. She popped in to talk about the changes being made to make it easier for Trans people to update their details to things like birth certificates and gender markers.
What I loved about this was the simplicity of reporting this really important change in such an appropriate place. Tranzmisson is the perfect platform and Alexis understands this more than any other reporter I can think of.
If you’ve heard a bit about the changes but want to get across the details I can highly recommend jumping into the ondemand version (or checking out the Tranzmission podcast). Hit the link here and jump to about 40 minutes in.
Really excellent work team! Great to see everyone working together and doing a bloody wonderful job of making sure our audience understands what the powers that be are up to.

Hot 100 Plug of the Week
Some awesome chat on Zedgiest last week with Jack and Luci having a good ol chinwag about the Hot 100.
This was all about how you manage to narrow down your fave tracks of the year, just shortlist after shortlist, which you can save if you’re a subscriber.
Voting is open now, so jump on and get a list of your top 10 tracks of the year going. Remember, subscriber votes count for double, so squeeze in a sub plug too if you can.
Also, once more for people at the back, voting closes at midnight on Boxing Day. I know this is tricky, so the way to imagine it is that you've still got all day Boxing Day to vote, but at one minute past 11:59pm on December 26, it's all over. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
4ZZZ Top Banana of the Week
I’m going to start bringing back vollie shout-outs because there’s so much awesome work going on around this place.
The first cab off the rank for this new title is announcer and tech whiz, Ben Ryan. He’s been doing some wonderful work over the last few weeks, first sorting out new uninterrupted power supplies for the studios (if they start beeping it means the power if off and you’ve got about 5 minutes before the studio shuts down) and then bringing Fela back to life over the weekend.
Honourable mention to Patrick King as well! He was up for most of the weekend making sure Fela survived. We wouldn’t have an audio server today without the very hard work of these two.

Album of the Week - Mitch, Please, Yes, Thanks.
The new EP from Mitch Please is taking the cake this week. Bathe your ears in the pleasantaries of Yes, Thanks whenever you get the chance.
Here’s the write-up from the AotW committee: ""Long a staple of the 4ZZZ Hot 100 top placings local punk nerds Mitch Please are back with another 6 track EP 'Yes, Thanks'. In fact, this EP contains 'The Power Of The Trade' which placed number 3 on last year's count. This will be fun. Enjoy the week long punk energy, and may it serve as a timely reminder to vote in the Hot 100!"
Last week’s AotW, Platonic Sex, took out our most played new release, trumping Tia Gostelow and Thelma Plum.
The Seven Days of Zedmas
Tis the season for us to come up with our own interpretation of gift giving and community so save us from the capitalistic hellscape of Christmas that we’re drowning in.
Locked In and Anthony the Accountant have come up with Zedmas, which will be a week of giveaways from the 19th of December flanking Gravy day on the 21st. They’ll be giveaways for subscribers, opportunities to help buy gifts on behalf of people inside and a triple zed reimagining of How to Make Gravy, which I’m very excited about!
Keep your eyes peeled for more details but most likely if we need your help someone will get in touch directly.
Thanks so much to Locked In for taking the lead on this one and building on Anthony the Accountant’s very generous gift giving from last year.
Woodford Volunteer Callout
If you’re looking for plans between Xmas and New Years, 4EB is looking for zed volunteer to join the crew covering Woodford this year. This is a super fun week, where you get to wander around collecting content for a few live broadcasts from the festival.
This is what you’d need to be up for (thanks to Alex from 4EB for sending this through):
- Must be able to attend for the duration of the event 27th Dec - Jan 1st
- Be okay with camping, maybe sharing a tent with another volunteer. - Be okay with walking long distances. During the event, the festival is actually the 67th largest town in Australia and last time we went a broadcaster walked 35000 steps in a day!
- Own laptop is preferred for pre-production of packages. We will bring any other tech that's needed, portable recorders, SD card readers, batteries etc.
Let me know if you’re keen ASAP if you’re keen. If you don’t get to me before the end of Tuesday (when I go away), get in touch with Salty at email@example.com
Thanks for playing along!
If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the
4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
