Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.

It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.

Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to  regurgitate the information herein).

Hey Groovers,

I'm back from COVID, sorta. My brain is just about to hit a wall, but here in body at least! What a week to be back in body form as well! We've got our birthday party this Thursday at The Brightside, Hot 100 voting open and our vollie party on Sunday at The Cave Inn (would love to see you there).

If you need me for anything, please don't delay. I'm away from the middle of next week for a week, so let me know if I can help out at all.

Stay Free,
Stocky

Catch of the Week - The Zoo turns 30.

I know we’re turning 47 this week, but The Zoo is throwing a party too! That iconic venue is turning 30, which is a marvellous achievement for an independent venue.

It’s particularly cute that we both grew up in the Valley around the same time, both moving in in the early 90s.

To honour this achievement and tell some stories, last week on Talking Zeds Miki invited Jo Curran, the Zoo’s founder, for a nice long chat.

This wasn’t a chat about how an old sewing machine factory was turned into a venue, but about how The Zoo became a hub for this city’s alternative scene by fostering a community of musicians and creatives.

Def hop back in to check that out.

Catch of the Week x 2 - Buttery Music School on The Hangover.

Ok, so because I didn’t get one of these out last week, I’ve got a couple of catches in the chamber. Here’s the one you missed.

Jodie and Tiegan capped off a great show Monday before last, with a chat with Jamie from Buttery Music School about their first EP release.

Buttery is an independent music school that’s hosts all manner of students and has just released is first EP of student work. It was a real treat hearing Jamie chatting through the tracks.

This was a really wonderful chat and great example of the great work zed does highlighting the work of independent creatives. Thanks Jodie and Tiegan.

Catch up on the whole chat here. Gets going just after 5pm.

Album of the Week - Platonic Sex's Grip

We’ve got Platonic Sex taking the mantle this week! Here’s the skinny from the AotW committee.

"With the earworm single 'Devil's Advocate' Platonic Sex cemented themselves on 4ZZZ playlists this year, and for good reason. Many may have caught them playing at the Reclink Community Cup or at Sonic Masala Fest or just about anywhere around our local climes, and latched on to the crunchy rock hype. We love local music at the Zeds and it's great to receive a debut so effusively. May you also be gripped, respectfully."

Kitchen’s Floor (last week’s AotW) cleaned up in our most played, followed closely by the new Sacred Hearts and VOIID singles. Smooth!

We're turning 47 this Thursday!!!

Would you look at that! We’re almost 50! To help mark this march toward our half century we’re throwing a party at The Brightside this Thursday night.

It’ll be a real time! We’ve got our friends The Double Happiness, PhD!, Ethan Enoch and Sali Eri serenading us, they’ll be a raffle, pass the parcel and cake!

Also, link right here for sub discount tickets if you’re keen but don’t forget that if you’re an active vollie we can pop you on the door, so just reply to this email if you want in on that list.

See you Thursday!

Hot 100 Voting Open Now

As you’ve probably seen, voting or the Hot 100 is open now! Get on it - hot100.4zzz.org.au

This process follows the usual drill, go on, vote for your favourite tracks and on January 1st we’ll count down the, wait for it, top 100 tracks of the year.

It’s a reasonably straightforward pitch on air, just tell people to go and vote. Don’t forget to mention that votes from subscribers are worth double those of non-subs, which is a lovely lil perk.

We’re also going to be throwing a big ol hoedown at The Triffid on January 1st for the countdown, so make sure you let folks know that’s coming as well.

Finally, check the artwork that Josh Murphy (@smellychops) knocked up for this!

Hot 100 List Collation

To make it easy for you as we’re plugging the Hot 100 on air over the next few weeks we’re (Jayden) is compiling the shortlisted songs into some folders on FELA.

Now while this is a very generous task, it’s also a heap of work so if you’ve got some time over the next week or two please get in touch with Jayden to help him out a bit. It should actually be pretty fun as you listen through a heap of the most played tracks on zed for the last year.

Email Jayden if you’re keen to help out (jaydenandrews66@gmail.com) or jump on Slack and send him a message there. If you get stuck, hit me up and I’ll loop you together. The current plan is to get one or two people into zed this Saturday to make a good dent in it.

End of year vollie party this Sunday

One of the things that came out of the volunteer survey I sent around a few months ago was that people are keen for more in-person zed catch-ups.

I reckon that’s a wonderful idea, so I hit up The Cave Inn at Woolloongabba to see if they’d open early for us on Sunday so we could come and hang out.
Here’s the specific deets: 4ZZZ Vollie Party - The Cave Inn - Sunday December 11 - 1-5pm

We’ll have the run of the place in the early arvo, so come on down from 1pm and have a few drinks and pizza (zed’s shout) to say thanks for all the incredible work you’ve done for us this year.

Thank you Michelle

The outstanding Michelle Vlatkovic is skipping town. She’s still going to help out with Souljah Sistars, but is heading down to Eora Nation to look after her folks.

To celebrate the work Michelle has done for the station we’re throwing a little soiree at zed on Saturday arvo, from 1pm. Michelle has done a huge amount to bring more First Nations volunteers to zed, leading the Pass the Mic training program, and has been an outstanding mentor, so a celebration is very well deserved.

We’ll have some drinks and food on, so if you’re free please come on down. 1pm, zed, this Saturday.

Locked in Xmas Special Deets

I’ve got a message here for you from CJ about our Locked In Xmas Day special. The pic is a letter sent in from a listener so you can see just how much Locked In means to people.
---
The Locked In special marathon on the 25th December is a 4ZZZ tradition and you’re invited to be a part of it.

The Locked In Crew would love you to join them if you can spare a few hours throughout the day. We kick off at 6am and run all the way through to 10pm - that’s a whopping 16 hours of continuous radio.

Please consider, Locked In content is not for everyone. While we try to keep our show and Locked In day light hearted, the reality is anything but. The letters we read can be confronting, especially in their raw form. Tears are guaranteed, laughter is a must and so is respect for all humans, including our listeners, and the many intersections surrounding incarceration and criminalisation.

If you’re not comfortable reading letters, or can’t be there on the day, here’s some other ways you can contribute:

- Record a ‘shout out’ from your own show wishing everyone a happy Locked In day, leave it in the Locked In folder or email it to us
- Pre-record yourself reading out a letter (we can provide you with one the week prior)

Thanks for playing along! If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing manager@4zzz.org.au by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the 4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
