Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.
It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.
Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to
regurgitate the information herein).
Happy End of Financial Year to one and all. This isn't just a celebration that Anthony the Accountant will self-depreicatingly celerbrate alone, it's something we can all get in on as we encorange people to donate to zed to reduce their taxable income (that's a sentence I never expected to write).
As always, read on for the latest zed news and happenings. There's a bit here were I give away a fantale, so keep your eyes out for that. There's also a job in here too (although not with us).
If you need anything feel free to hit me up. I'm going to be working remotely for the rest of the week, so I'll be hard to get on the phone. Your best bet will be to hit me up on email or through slack.
Have an awesome week all!
Catch of the Week - First Nations Carpark Show
My highlight of the last week was the First Nations Carpark Show we threw at the station and broadcast on-air on Saturday.
It was an absolute treat of a day to hang out in the carpark to catch the likes of Sachem, Chloe Terare and Sunny Luwe. Tab did a wonderful job of hosting and Aunty Maggie was a treat to have MCing. Ez did a great job of capturing the joy of Sunny, Tab and Aunty Maggie with this pic.
Huge thanks to everyone who made that possible, with special shoutouts to Tab who helmed the show (and organised so much) and Dave who made everyone sound so good!
If you haven’t already seen, we’ve got a re-print of the 80s Murri Time shirt available at the moment - with all the money we make going back into First Nations training - so grab one of them soon!
Sub Plug of the Week - The Pineapple Rebellion
Alexis didn’t hold back on Friday morning, launching into a sub plug almost off the bat at the start of The Pineapple Rebellion.
It was a wonderful run through of all our different sub categories, which is always a treat, and then segued into a reminder that we’re a handy place to write off some tax around this time of year.
As you may know, 4ZZZ is a registered not-for-profit, which means that folks can claim any donations back on tax.
As the end of financial year approaches (it ends on Friday), please remind people that we’re a much more legitimate way to reduce their tax burden than the Cayman Islands.
Keep those sub plugs coming and remind people to head to the website to get them sorted. We’ve dropped off a bit this month, so a push during the last week of the month will be really helpful.
Album of the Week - Cable Ties, All Her Plans
There’s not many bands outside of this city that I feel really align with the zed ethos, but if I was forced to pick a couple Cable Ties would be at the top of that list. This means I’m stoked to see them take out our Album of the Week.
As usual, here’s the word from the AotW committee:
"Melbourne 3 piece powerhouse Cable Ties have been gracing the 4ZZZ airwaves ever since their debut album in 2017. Not only do we love the fierce punk energy of this band, we also love their independent spirit and organic build that's seen them gradually win over to larger audiences. Their set at the Units Fest at Eatons Hill Hotel earlier this year was an absolute cracker, and featured a lot of the tunes that grace this latest record - songs such as 'Thoughts Back' and 'Time For You'. 'All Her Plans' continues the impressive rise."
When it comes to most played, Sarah Stockholm, last week’s AotW, has come in at number 1. Number two is Sachem, tailed by Selve with their Ghostwriter single.
Phone Booth Upgraddes!!!
That’s right! Upgraddes with two ds, for a double dose of the phone booths improvement (there’s a Fantale in it for anyone who gets that reference).
Jokes, aside, this is really cool! Over the last couple of weeks Pat has installed new computers, mics and screen arms in the recording booths.
IMPORTANT: The mics in there are really nice, but they run off a 9v battery so make sure to turn them off when you’re done!
There will be some handy notes on the wall for how to use the booths. There’s loads of instructions on the wiki about how to use the booths, so if you’re not sure how they work jump on there - wiki.4zzz.org.au/interview_booths
If you've got any questions, or find anything weird when you're in there, please let me know!
4ZZZ Opens Up!
I’m excited to let you all know that in a few weeks, we’re going to be throwing open the doors to zed towers as part of Brisbane Open House.
We’ll be doing tours and the like through the building on July 15th, the Saturday of the weekend, so people can get a first hand look at how community radio ticks.
You’ll be seeing a vollie callout from Salty over the next week or so asking for help, so keep an eye out for that one.
Jerbbbs - Audiocraft Podcast Producer
For those of you looking for some paid work, I’m excited to let you know that Audiocraft is looking for a Podcast Producer to work on the second season of SEEN - an SBS podcast about cultural creatives who have risen to excellence despite arriving in a role-model vacuum – along with other exciting Audiocraft projects.
Their dream candidate is passionate about audio storytelling and will bring a positive attitude, curiosity and creativity to the team. It's a 5-month contract, 4 days per week, based at the Audiocraft office in Alexandria, Sydney.
Thanks for playing along! If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing email@example.com by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the
4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
