Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.

It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.

Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to  regurgitate the information herein).

Hey nerds,

I've got another weekly missive for you here.

Most importantly, we've got more announcer training applications open. This latest course is going to run over four Monday nights, so hopefully it's a bit more accessible for those who have other commitments on weekends.

There's also some headphones news. In short, they've all been disappearing so it's worth bringing your own while we work out what model can withstand the torture you put them through (they've discontinued the last ones we bought).

It was awesome to see everyone who made it to the Broadcast Park BBQ on Sunday arvo too. Like I say further down, we'll have more vollie events because that's something a lot of people asked for in the vollie newsletter last year.

Stay free,
Stocky

Catch of the Week - Duck Stab

I reckon my favourite bit of radio over the last week was probably Duck Stab, with Bella not only playing some fantastic (and nicely varied) music, but also laying out some of that lovely radiocraft I was chatting about in the announcer meeting.

If you missed that, radiocraft is stuff like telling people they’re listening to 4ZZZ, introducing yourself, back announcing, and keeping mic breaks short if you don’t have specific segments. These are things that are really helpful for people listening, so they know who and what they’re listening to.

Bella nailed all these things, always letting poeple know they’re listening to zed, what show she hosts and her name. For folks who tuned in after the show started, there would have been no doubt what was going on.

I also really enjoyed Bella’s description of the music she’s enjoying at the moment, “strange, weird, interesting drums,” which I think could be said of the lot of the stuff we play. It was a really nice personal moment.

If you want to catch up, jump right in here. Plenty of excellent chat and tunes.

The only thing I didn’t catch was a sub plug, but that’s ok, because guess what’s coming next!

Sub Plug of the Week -

With a few new Zed Digital shows starting over the last week I was treated to a nice sub plug from Mack and Jeremy on Table Top Talk when checking out the new offerings.

Mack kept this one really simple, with a good reminder that subscriptions give you that patented 4ZZZ warm-inner glow that we're famous for.

This wasn't a long slog, just a nice mention that we're subscriber funded. It could have used a little bump with a website mention to help folks seal the deal, but it's the first ever Table Top Talk so I'm just stoked that in the excitement of the debut show Mack and Jez remembered to talk subscriptions at all.

It’s been a very slow start to June as far as subs go, with just a handful over the last week. Please remember your sub plugs so we can remind our listeners that we’re only here thanks to their support.

Album of the Week - Naretha Williams, Into Dusk We Fall.

Now we’re officially in winter, we’ve gone a little darker with Album of the Week. It’s been taken out by the latest release from Naretha Williams.

Here’s the write up from the AotW committee:

“Following on from 2020's 'BLAK MASS' which was an AOTW here at 4ZZZ, we couldn't wait to hear what Naretha Williams did next. 'Into Dusk We Fall' carries on the goodness, a brooding, emotive electronic record that pulsates with dramatic flair from start to finish. The leading single off the album 'Tender Kill' got some solid airplay here at the Zeds and we think there'll be more songs in this collection that populate our airwaves. Naretha and her collaborator husband Cyrus, although initially distanced from each other for the creation of this album, have somehow combined for a record that'll make you dance in the dark."

Our Album of the Week continues to claim top spot in our new release charts, with Locust Revival taking out the number one spot, followed by Moreton and Square (another all local top 3!).

Missing Studio Headphones

So after replacing all the studio headphones about a year ago, we’re now down to three sets.

The sets we had in there, which were standing up pretty well to the beatings you put them through have been discontinued. We’re going to test a few different lots of headphones over the next few weeks to see which ones might last and then buy some replacements.

In the meantime, please bring in your own headphones. If you’ve got a set of ours at home (or know a guest who might) please bring them back in.

Announcer Training

We’ve got more announcer training on the horizon, this time over a series of Monday nights in June and July.

If you’re keen, jump into this link to fill out an application.

If you’re a regular part of a 4ZZZ program then we do ask that you’re trained. If that’s you please apply here (and tell us what show you’re involved with).
Announcers, please send this on to any of your cohosts or folks you’re keen to bring into the show.

We’ve had more applicants than spaces over the last few, so we’ve prioritised people already involved with shows and with a volunteer commitment at the station. Again, tell us what you’re doing so we can make sure you get a spot.

There are going to be some new times opening up on the Zed Digital grid soon, so if you’ve got an idea for something you want to make now, get into this and you could be on-air in the next month or so!

Hit me up if you’ve got any questions.

Ska Trek's 30th Birthday

Ska Trek is turning 30 and they’re throwing a party to celebrate!
Next weekend, Saturday the 17th of June, presenters past and present are taking over the Cave Inn

That night should be a corker, they’ve lined up The Snouts and Fiesta Fiasco to play and will be spinning a heap of ska to keep everyone skanking in between. The whole thing is free, the Cave Inn does pizza and has great beer, so you don’t really have an excuse.

There’s also going to be some on-air celebrations next Thursday on Ska Trek to mark this pretty impressive milestone.

Broadcast Park BBQ

Thanks to everyone who made it along to Broadcast Park BBQ on Sunday. It was a great, if not slightly chilly and overcast, arvo on Mt Cootha having a squiz at all our broadcast infrastructure.

Massive thanks are also owed to Pat and Ben for taking everyone through the site and explaining how we get from Zed Towers into radios all around town. People have only had wonderful things to say about getting through that space.

We’ll have more vollie gatherings through the year, with the next one probably our Radiothon wrap party on the 20th of August.

Thanks for playing along! If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing manager@4zzz.org.au by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the 4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
