Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.

It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.

Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to  regurgitate the information herein).

Hey Groovers,

I've got a vollie newsletter for you all here. Read on for all the latest around zed, including the opportunity to throw your own gig, the path to some free beers and the link to catch up on the station meeting last week (for the second time in a day, no less!).

Hit me up if you've got any questions. I'm always around so let me know if I can lend a hand with anything.

Catch of the Week - Shoegrazzze

I’ve got another Zed Digital shoutout this week, with ShoegraZZZe turning out a great show last Thursday with special guest, Ag (of Liminal Space fame).

Owen got Ag in to guest program the show and they rolled out some truly excellent selections. I’ve recently found myself listening to a bunch of Slowdive, so it was probably Sugar for the Pill that lodged this show in my memory.

The rest was a real treat too, with Owen and Ag chatting through the selections and doing some truely wonderful show cross promotion. Obviously there was some Liminal Space chat, but Owen also shouted out Rusted Satellites and Randomizzed (which he’s also involved in).

If you didn’t catch this the first time around jump back and listen OnDemand right here.

Sub Plug of the Week - Evie on Friday Neon

As I was getting out of Dodge last Friday I managed to catch an absolute ripper sub plug from Evie who was filling in for Quentin on Friday Neon

It wasn’t a massive runup or anything, she just rolled out a simple note that if you were enjoying the connection and wonderful content that 4ZZZ offers you can support that by subscribing.

While this could have been bolstered with a website plug or some more detail, there’s still lots of value in small mentions like this. They’re an important reminder to listeners that we’re only here because of their support. If there’s a plug with the website an hour or two later, or the next time they tune in, it could be what pushes them across the line.

Great work Evie

We’re still a shade down on our subs from May last year, but I wouldn’t panic about that. Our incredible April Atonement effort this year probably got a few folks subscribing a little earlier than they might usually. I think we also had an April Atonement sub window that went into May a bit lsat year too, so that’s probably skewed the numbers a bit.

Album of the Week - Locust Revival with Good Grief

Locust Revival have been getting a heap of love on-air at zed so this one didn’t really come as a surprise to me.

Here’s the word from the AotW committee:

"4ZZZ has long had a soft spot for goth/post punk music. If you've been a constant listener to the Zeds this past year you've no doubt heard the gloriously downcast Locust Revival. Their singles such as 'Good Grief' and 'A Mess' have been getting a good whipping from announcers and appeared in many 4ZZZ Top 20s. And well, it's quite an achievement writing and recording cold, dark and defeated songs, contrasting against the bright relentless heat existing outside here in these climes. This album 'Good Grief' is excellent, but don't act too excited."

Our most played new releases have been topped by Moreton, last week’s AotW. Square has followed them up with Cable Ties rounding out the top 3. Huge thanks for Nick Jones for pulling together our top 20 each week!

Broadcast Park BBQ - This Sunday!

This Sunday we’re heading up Mt Cootha to catch up and show you how we broadcast our signal all across this wonderful city.

From 1pm, we’re going to be hanging out in Brush Box Park and doing tours through broadcast park, which is where our transmitter lives.

We’ll take some beers up, have some snacks and pop some vege snags on the BBQ (provided we can claim it early enough). It’ll be a really fun day so if you’re free come and hang out.

Station Meeting Recording

So good to see so many of you at the station meeting last Wednesday, either in person at zed or online.

If you didn’t make it along, you can catch up with the video here

These meetings are compulsory for announcers so if you weren’t there on Wednesday please reply to this email with my favourite show (which gets a mention around the 2/3rd mark) so we can mark you off the roll.

If you need a more accessible version, let me know and I’ll sort out a transcript of the meeting for you.

Community Cup - Training on now!

The 2023 Community Cup is fast approaching. It’s happening on July 30 at Everton Wolves JAFC and is an absolute ripper day.

While going to watch the game is really fun, playing in it is even better and as a 4ZZZ vollie you’ve got an open invitation to play for the Brisbane Lines.

If you’re interested, fill out this EOI - https://forms.gle/TBXuzvvrkvBVCge29 - and head on down to the Everton Wolves field on Sunday arvo from 3pm. Don’t wait for an invite, just rock up, say hi and have a run around.

You’ll get taught everything you need to know, so don’t worry if you don’t know the rules. The training is the best part!

If you’ve got any questions, hit me up.

Cave Inn show callout

Our friends at The Cave Inn near the Gabba are keen to try a few new things on Thursday nights and have asked if any of you are keen to organising a gig around your show.

They’re pretty open to ideas, but are thinking maybe a fortnightly thing if it’s something you’re keen to do.
If this has piqued your interest please get in touch and I can connect you with the folks at the Inn.

It’s a really cool space, very welcoming and supportive, so I reckon they’ll be great to work with.

Thanks for playing along! If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing manager@4zzz.org.au by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the 4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
