Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.
It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.
Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to
regurgitate the information herein).
Our winter has arrived! It’s cold! If this is your first winter at zed, it’s probably worth bringing in something nice and warm when you pop in (especially if you’re working on level 3).
There’s all your usuals in this newsletter, with a couple of notes about some graveyards we’re looking to fill, an announcer meeting reminder and a fundraiser to help out a zedder.
Let me know if there’s anything I can help you out with, but if not, have a great week! I’m off again this Friday, so catch me before then if you want to chat!
Catch of the Week - Sunday Morning Coming Down
This is going out to Evie and Blowharg (pictured) who did a ripper job of Sunday Morning Coming Down yesterday.
Evie is only recently announcer trained, but is already very comfortable behind the mic. I loved how she spoke about the music she was playing and the fun she had (coming back from a song only to be serenaded during the mic break, anyone?).
The playlist was excellent too. I loved the garagey tunes in the first hour and the stories she was able to tell about them. It’s this sort of knowledge that really sets us apart.
Also, two graveyards in a row for Catch of the Week too, which is very exciting and a great sign for the quality of radio that you’re all making at the moment!
Sub Plug of the Week - The Hangover
Even though this show hasn't even finished yet, they've cleaned up ths week.
Teigan and Meg in the studio have brought some April Atonement level sub plugs, with the light going off four times through the show this arvo (so far).
They've been self-fulfilling too, with every sub light flash setting off another sub-plug, which leads to the light flashing again, etc, etc. It's like our own perpetual motion machine!
It's been a great start to the week because while we barnstormed through April, we don’t seem to have the same subscriber wave in May that we did last year.
Keep those plugs coming (ideally at least one a show) because even though we had a heap of subs in April, it still means that only about 2% of listeners are subscribers to the station.
Album of the Week - Square with Introducing
We’ve got another local AotW on offer this week, with Square’s new EP, Introducing, taking the title.
Here’s the word from the Album of the Week committee:
"Ever since Square played on Right Here Right Now last year, the local quartet have been bouncing their way into more 4ZZZ playlists. This opening salvo 'Introducing' is hopefully a taste of bigger things to come for the post punk outfit. Once you've witnessed the band play live you can't help but imagine tracks such as 'Into Me' or recent single 'Repetition' without the highly energetic frontman Tom Czerwinski flailing their limbs around in abandon. Four-pieces with a sole lead singer used to be a thing too (think The Smiths, The Stone Roses etc etc), so it hits in all the right ways. Great new local music keeps being released, and we like playing it."
VOIID absolutely dominated the new release plays at zed last week, comfortably taking out most played over Tia Gostelow and Radium Dolls
Announcer Meeting - May 24th @ 6pm
We get to hang out again soon! We’ve got a station meeting booked in for Wednesday, May 24th, 6pm at Zed Towers.
With the new grid starting next month, this is a good chance to catch up, update you on all the happenings around the station and figure out what you need from us.
These meetings are compulsory for announcers, but all zed volunteers are welcome. We’ll have some drinks and snacks for you, as well as lots of other zedders to hang out with, so please try and make it in person.
It’s been almost a year since my last station meeting, after missing the last one with COVID, so I’m excited to hang out with you all again. See you in a couple of weeks!
Graveyard spots up for grabs
While we’re in the process of finalising the next grid (starts June 1, btw), there’s a couple of mid-week graveyard shifts (2-6am) we’re still looking to fill.
If you’re a night owl who fancies having some fun on the radio in the wee hours, please hit up Ian Powne at firstname.lastname@example.org to let him know you’re keen.
There’s no expectation you’ll stay on for more than one grid, but you can have a lot of fun with these shows. It’s where I’ve heard some of the most weird and wonderful programming.
Ian and I are both up for answering any questions you’ve got about these, so don’t be shy if you’re thinking about it.
Training rescheduled - May 21 and 28
There were some calendar clashes with our last training dates, so we’ve shuffled them to the Sundays on the 21st and 28th of May.
If you’re keen to get trained, or have someone on your show who needs to be trained, this is your last chance before the new grid. There’s only a couple of spots in this left.

Fundraiser for one of our Zed fam
Our former carpark coordinator, Jorja, is in a bit of a shit situation at the moment and is trying to raise some money for her medical bills.
Here’s the link to her GoFundMe with some of Jorja's story below - https://www.gofundme.com/f/318tfucxe0
“"It's safe to say, I've been going through it health-wise this year with something called Topical Steroid Withdrawal.
“I ingested some spinach that was contaminated with Datura from Woolworths last year that reacted really badly with my system, resulting in head to toe, oozing, and consistent eczema (painful body rash).
"I've now just got off my 3rd dose of steroids for the year and am currently dealing with a 3rd withdrawal."
Thanks for playing along! If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing email@example.com by 2pm Mondays. Got any burning questions about the studio, station policy or other FAQs? Check the
4ZZZ Wiki out, if accessing from outside of the station use the following loging credentials: zeduser / 4zzzrules. Have a great week connecting and amplifying the voices of our local communities!
