Welcome to 4ZZZ’s weekly newsletter for announcers and volunteers.
It can be difficult to keep on top of all of the missives that 4ZZZ HQ disseminates week to week, so in the interest of keeping your inboxes under control and our messaging clear, we’ll be doing our darndest to compile all of our comms into one weekly mailout.
Obviously there will be exceptions from time to time, but consider The Newsletter Formerly Known As your Monday afternoon treat (named so because we expect you to be able to
regurgitate the information herein).
I hope you've all had a wonderful couple of weeks. I enjoyed my week off the other week so much that I didn't get around to this newsletter. This week you're not so lucky though.
There's some great nuggets in here so please read on. We've had 30th birthday on air, an incredible gift from a friend of the station and news about how to get a radio show (so exciting!).
Read on to get the latest happenings around zed and as always, please hit me up if there's anything you need/ want/ think we can do better. It's always a pleasure to hear from you!
Catch of the Week - Happy 30th to Dykes on Mics and Queer Radio!
It’s birthday time, with both Queer Radio and Dykes on Mics turning 30 last week!
Both shows celebrated in style as well, with DoM kicking hosting inaugural host Gai Lemon and many more wonderful bits and pieces. Check the whole thing out here. Queer Radio kept the party going as well, so follow along with their hijinks here.
30 years is an absolutely astounding innings and speaks to the importance of these shows. Here’s to 30 more!
Of course, if your show is having a significant anniversary sometime soon, please let me or Matt (email@example.com) know so we can give you a good plug and make you feel celebrated too!
Sub Plug of the Week - Zedgiest
I’m throwing some love to Jack and Luci from Zedgiest this morning for their, I think, sub plug after the live reads.
They did a great runthrough, giving our sponsors some love, mentioning a the end how they’re all proud supporters of 4ZZZ. This rolled into a chat about how you, dear listener, could also become a proud zed subscriber.
There was a website plug, a solid recommendation and then a cough that sounded a lot like, “just do it,” or something to that effect. Very smooth, Jack.
Our subscriber numbers at the moment are tracking really well. We had more subs this September than we did last year and that’s thanks to all your work talking up the value of supporting zed.
Thank you! Keep it up!
Album of the Week - June Jones with Pop Music for Normal Women
Aw hell yeah! June Jones! I only came across June when I was booking Sounds Like Community Radio and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. So good to see this get voted as our AotW.
Here’s the rip from the Album of the Week Committtee:
"After June Jones performed as part of our Sounds Like Community Radio broadcast a few weeks back, our love for what she does only grew exponentially. Anticipation was already sky-high for a new album after steady 4ZZZ airplay for singles 'Motorcycle', 'Goblin Mindset' and 'If Only'. 'Pop Music For Normal Women' seals the deal. Themes of identity, loneliness, connection, illness, and transformation recur throughout Jones's semi-confessional songwriting on this third album. The gravity of these themes – inspired by the singer’s experience as a disabled trans woman – are offset by moments of wry humour, bouncing synths, and anthemic choruses. We love artists here at Zed who continue to build, who continue to document, especially if it results in some glorious pop like it does here."
Last week’s AotW from The Double Happiness was our most played new release of that week, narrowly beating out June who came in number two. I reckon June is in a great spot to take out the coveted AotW + Most Played New Release title for next week given that showing.
Speaking of new releases, my personal highlight of last week came from a drop that came via my pigeonhole.
I had a package in there from John from 4000 Records, tipping me off about the House Keys release that dropped on Friday.
The compilation features folks like the Spring Hill Walkers Club, The Double Happiness and We Set Sails (amoung so many more!) covering artists like Regurgitator, Sahara Beck and Coalfalls. I got Mom+Pop 10th Anniversary vibes, which is a very high bar!
It’s a beautiful tribute from local artists to local artists and something that felt right up our alley. I was even more surprised to see that all the proceeds from the release are going to be donated back to 4ZZZ, because John and the artists felt we were the best recipient (I’m not crying, you’re crying).
This release is hanging out in the digital library at the moment. Check the Hot Bin or the local compilations to track it down.
Show Applications Opening this Friday!
It’s almost show application time! Later this week there will be an email going around asking dor you to throw your hat in the ring for the next 102.1 and Zed Digital grid.
If you’re not sure what your plan is for the next grid please get in touch with either me or programming co-ord, Ian Powne. There’s always some moves, so if you’re thinking of finishing up or need a new spot, let us know so we can try and accommodate you somewhere. It's much easier if you let us know early.
Finally, if you need training, let me know and I’ll add you to the list. We’ve got our second test group running through now so that’ll start up proper very soon.
We’re throwing a Halloween Party! On Saturday the 29th of October we’re taking over Greaser for a 12-hour show!
There’s going to be a room of punk, metal, etc and a room of wild electronic. Sam, Samie and Converse have put together one hell of a show so check the full deets here.
Tickets here too.
Keep your eyes on your inbox because there’ll be a vollie newsletter heading around in the next week or so. We’re going to need a heap of people coming together to make this happen (we’ve already had a heap of people work really hard to get it to this point) so please lend a hand if you can.
CBAA Women and Gender Diverse Board Rep callout
Our ever-engaging peak body, The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA), has put the word out to see who might be keen to take up the women and gender-diverse people’s rep on their board.
This is a board like the 4ZZZ board, which makes strategic decisions on the direction of the CBAA, so if you’ve got thoughts on this definately have a think about applying.
You can find out more details here - https://www.cbaa.org.au/article/2022-women-and-gender-diverse-peoples-representative-nominations-open
If you’re thinking about having a crack at this, feel free to hit me up and ask questions. I can give you a bit of background about what the CBAA like, hook you up with current members and help you figure out if this is right for you.
Thanks for playing along!
If you have any big interviews, noteworthy subs shoutouts or particularly heroic volunteering work that deserves a shout out, let me know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org by 2pm Mondays.
